Background of the Study
The global transition to clean energy is critical for mitigating climate change, improving public health, and fostering sustainable development. In Nigeria, the adoption of clean energy solutions such as solar power, energy-efficient appliances, and clean cooking methods is gaining momentum, but awareness remains low in rural areas like Gwarzo Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State. Advertising plays a pivotal role in bridging this awareness gap by educating communities about the benefits of clean energy and encouraging its adoption.
Mass media, social media, and community-based advertising campaigns have proven effective in promoting clean energy usage. According to Adeyemi and Usman (2023), advertising campaigns that highlight economic savings, health benefits, and environmental sustainability are more likely to resonate with rural audiences. This study examines how advertising influences awareness and attitudes toward clean energy in Gwarzo LGA, offering insights for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to accelerate the clean energy transition.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of clean energy technologies, their adoption in Gwarzo LGA remains limited due to low awareness and socio-cultural barriers. While advertising has been employed to promote clean energy, its impact is often undermined by poorly targeted messages, lack of cultural relevance, and limited reach.
Research by Yusuf et al. (2024) emphasizes that effective advertising is crucial for overcoming misconceptions about clean energy and demonstrating its value. This study addresses the gap by exploring the role of advertising in driving awareness and adoption of clean energy solutions in Gwarzo LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of advertising in raising awareness about clean energy usage in Gwarzo LGA.

  2. To analyze the effectiveness of different media channels in promoting clean energy adoption.

  3. To identify barriers to clean energy-focused advertising in the region.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does advertising raise awareness about clean energy usage in Gwarzo LGA?

  2. What media channels are most effective in promoting clean energy adoption?

  3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of clean energy-focused advertising campaigns?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Advertising significantly raises awareness about clean energy usage in Gwarzo LGA.

  2. Media channels vary in their effectiveness in promoting clean energy adoption.

  3. Barriers such as cultural beliefs and misinformation hinder the success of clean energy-focused advertising.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the role of advertising as a catalyst for clean energy adoption, offering actionable recommendations for designing impactful campaigns. The findings provide a valuable resource for clean energy stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profits, and private sector actors, seeking to promote sustainable energy solutions in rural communities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Gwarzo LGA, Kano State, and examines advertising's role in raising awareness of clean energy usage. The findings are region-specific and not generalizable to other areas.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Advertising: Communication strategies aimed at promoting awareness and adoption of clean energy solutions.

  2. Clean Energy: Renewable and sustainable energy sources such as solar power and energy-efficient technologies.

  3. Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding about clean energy benefits and usage.
